Fed up with receiving cold calls from financial "services" companies? This is how to deal with them.

I can't imagine there is a single individual in the UAE who actually appreciates so-called financial services companies cold-calling them in an attempt to sell them something.

These companies have no interest whatsoever in your well-being. The only thing they want to do is take a slice of your money.

I received such a call this morning. I am currently out of the country, so not only was my time wasted as some robot started to read through his script, but I was incurring roaming charges whilst he was doing it.

The gentleman was polite enough, and provided me with his company name and their website address.

On the website, they have contact forms for all their employees, so I sent the following to one of their Senior Vice Presidents:

"Dear Mr SB-

This morning I received a telephone call from an employee of your company, a Mr ZK.

I do not appreciate receiving intrusive and uninvited telephone calls from companies that I have no dealings with.

Delivery of this message will constitute acknowledgement by your company that you will honour any invoices sent by me with regards your company engaging with me by any form of communication, be it email, voicemail, voice, text, fax, or any other current or future technology.

I have two sets of rates which are set out below:
  • Hourly rate: US$750 per hour. Minimum engagement - 3 hours.
  • Daily rate: US$5000 per day. Minimum engagement - 2 days.
As such, please that the absolute minimum amount that your company will be invoiced should you choose to contact me again will be US$2250.

If I receive a personal reply to this message, you will be sent an invoice.

If any representative of your company contacts me by any means, at any point in the future, you will be sent an invoice.

Delivery of this message constitutes explicit agreement with the above terms and conditions for engaging my services.

There is just two exceptions to the above terms of engagement -
  1. If I receive a single automated response acknowledging receipt of this message, I will not invoice your company for dealing with it.
  2. If I receive a single email providing the details of the individual or company who provide you with my private number, I will not invoice your company for dealing with it.
Any and all other subsequent communications will be billed.

Kind regards,

"

Let's see what happens.

If you're fed up with companies such as this intruding on your privacy and wasting your time - simply so that they can make money from you (again - this is ALL they are interested in), I encourage you to take a similar approach.

Have fun!

Announcement: Leaving the world of digital photography

So after a couple of years of fun, I've decided to go back to basics
and do this photography thing properly.

Back in late January, I placed an order for a Walker Titan XL 5x7,
along with 72mm and 210mm lenses.

Since these things are hand-built to order, it's been a bit of a wait,
but everything is finally being shipped in a couple of days.

I won't be going fully digital, as my workflow will be
develop>scan>digital darkroom>print. Scanner is the Epson V750.

This means I have quite a bit of Canon kit that I will no longer have
a use for, including a full set of TS-E's, two 300mm f/2.8's, 200mm
f/2.8, 14mm f/2.8, 16-35 f/2.8, Sigma 8mm and 15mm fisheyes, 5D MkII
and 1D MkIV bodies. And a bunch of other stuff I can't remember right
now.

If you're in Dubai and fancy any of it, just drop me a line. Pricing
will be 50% of Adorama list prices for all the kit. First come, first
served.

Finally, I want to expunge my record of digital imagery. This blog, my
YouTube channel, and my Gigapan account along with all gigapans (yes,
including the Dubai 45 Gigapixel) will be deleted from existence at
midnight tonight.

I'll be back online with samples of film scans in a few months time.

Thanks for watching!
